Deacons joins Equal Opportunities Commission as a signatory of the Racial Diversity & Inclusion Charter in August 2023

We are thrilled to announce that Deacons has joined the ranks as one of the 300+ signatories to the Diversity & Inclusion Charter of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC).

Cynthia Chung, our Staff Partner, signed “The Racial Diversity & Inclusion Charter for Employers” on behalf of Deacons. This Charter encompasses nine goals centered around fostering an inclusive policy, culture, and work environment.

By signing the Charter, we reaffirm our dedication to championing racial diversity and fostering a culture of inclusion within our organization. Our partnership with the EOC also stands as a testament to our shared vision of transforming Hong Kong into a thriving and inclusive workplace.

Our social impact through community partnership

As an ongoing commitment to uplift our support to ethnically diverse community, we collaborate with The Zubin Foundation which works to improve the lives of Hong Kong’s ethnically diverse community by reducing suffering and providing opportunities through direct outreach in the community.

We have been partnering with The Zubin Foundation, providing opportunities to nurture talents from all racial backgrounds and initiatives to empower their financial sustainability.

Empowering ethnic minority talents through internship opportunities

We take pride in our partnership with The Zubin Foundation to provide internship for undergraduate law students of ethnic minority groups. The internship offers the students firsthand experience which helps them understand the work environment, culture and expectations, making them better prepared for future employment. In July 2023, we hosted a two-week internship for Krizza Apo, an undergraduate law student, in of one of our practice groups.

As an Equal Opportunity Employer, Deacons remains committed to providing equal opportunities for individuals from all racial backgrounds. We believe in fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace that embraces the talents and contributions of every individual.

It is our pleasure to partner with The Zubin Foundation in providing a placement opportunity for an LLB student of ethnic minority. We welcomed Krizza to our Corporate Commercial Practice Group for a two-week internship programme this summer. The programme provided Krizza with a practical law firm experience and demonstrated our continued efforts in building a diverse and inclusive workplace. The Zubin Foundation is a charity dedicated to improve the lives of Hong Kong’s ethnic minorities by reducing suffering and providing opportunities. We look forward to working with The Zubin Foundation again in the future.

It was a real privilege to host Krizza in our office for two weeks’ work experience. From the very start, Krizza displayed a high level of confidence which allowed her personality to shine, even though this was her first work experience in a law firm.

The experience of supervising Krizza was rewarding and a timely reminder that we all need support and encouragement when entering into the legal or any other profession and that even a modest amount of mentoring can hopefully make a big difference!

I am fortunate to be able to join one of the best law firms in Hong Kong, Deacons, which offered me an enjoyable internship experience. The internship provided me insights on what lawyers and legal support staff do and how they contribute to our society. During the internship, I assisted and learnt from my supervisor and buddy which in turn grows my legal knowledge and practical skills. The support from Deacons is stupendous as they provided me assurance and moral support which has motivated me to work harder in order to be a successful lawyer.

The whole internship was an exciting learning opportunity and I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity.

Supporting their economical sustainability

In the festive December, we invited The Zubin Foundation to showcase their hand-painted coasters in our Christmas Marketplace. This occasion provided a platform to promote economic empowerment of the ethnic minorities and contribute to their financial sustainability. It also inspired our employees to learn about different culture and traditions.

Hong Kong prides itself on being a diverse and inclusive society that values equal opportunities for all. Despite the city’s multicultural fabric, it is disheartening to acknowledge that ethnic minorities have not received the attention and support they deserve.

At Deacons, we are committed to making a positive impact to the wider community. It is important to truly support the financial sustainability of ethnic minority individuals by providing platforms and resources to enhance their economic opportunities. This forms part of our impactful awareness raising exercise as a whole.

For many years, Deacons has demonstrated unwavering dedication to giving back to society and actively supporting the establishment of a diverse and inclusive community in Hong Kong. As we celebrate this universal day of joy, we aspire to share our joy with the ethnic minority community in need through the Christmas Marketplace. This is an inspiring opportunity for us to learn about different cultures, traditions, and artistic expressions which in turn help us to develop a greater sense of empathy and respect to people of diverse background.
